In order to prevent water from freezing during the winter months, a solution of antifreeze is added to the water and thoroughly mixed. The circulating pump then works to push the water through the heat exchanger (HEX), which allows for an exchange of heat to occur. Specifically, the hot water from the flat plate collectors interacts with the cold water present in the HEX, resulting in the cold water being heated up. This heated water is then sent directly to those using the system for their domestic needs, such as showering or cooking.
The glazing frame of a flat plate collector is designed to capture solar energy, while the plate itself acts as the primary absorber of heat. Flow tubes are incorporated into the design, allowing water to circulate and absorb the captured heat from the absorber plate. To minimize heat transfer losses, insulation material can be added to the box enclosure.

Working Principle

A flat plate solar collector is a box made of metal with an absorber plate that is colored and located at the center. The cover of the collector is made of glass and placed on top, and the bottom and sides are insulated to reduce any heat loss. When sunlight passes through the glass cover, it is absorbed by the absorber plate, which then converts solar energy into heat energy. The copper pipes that are attached to the absorber plate ensure that the heat transfer liquid is heated before being dispersed.
