The most common solar collectors for heating homes and buildings are the flat-plate collector (FPC) and the evacuated tube collector (ETC). These two types of collectors are widely used due to their effectiveness in harnessing solar energy.
FPC solar collectors possess several advantages due to their simple design, low installation expenses, and prolonged resilience. However, they do have two drawbacks in terms of their thermal efficiency being relatively low and the working fluid experiencing a less significant temperature rise in comparison to ETCs. To reiterate, FPC type collectors have notable benefits such as their cost-effective installation and long-lasting structure, although they are less efficient in terms of thermal performance and may not achieve a substantial temperature increase in the working fluid when compared to ETCs.
Solar collectors that are constructed using glass materials and fall under the ETC category have the ability to heat up the working fluid to a higher degree compared to those categorized under FTC. However, these collectors are vulnerable to damage from even a minor external impact.
Up until now, the most favored domestic solar water heater type has been FPC.

Working Principle
A flat plate solar collector acts as a specialized heat exchanger designed to absorb solar radiation and transfer heat to a medium. It is comprised of various components including an absorbing plate core, shell, transparent cover plate, insulation material, as well as other related parts. This device facilitates the exchange of heat between the medium and the sun. To incorporate solar radiation effectively, a heating circulation pipe and water tank are integrated, transforming the system into an equipment capable of harnessing solar energy to heat cold water.
